ALEX Morrissey, the CEO of Jamaicansmusic.com, presented two scholarships to students of the Excelsior Community College, courtesy of his company.
The event took place at the school’s Student Awards Ceremony for 2011-2012, at the Courtleigh Auditorium, on November 8. The scholarships were given to two students within the department of performing arts, to continue their studies at the institution.
“The company has reached a point of maturity where we are comfortable giving back. It’s something we plan to do every year. I felt that by helping someone else, he or she may become the next big dancer or actor through an opportunity they wouldn’t have gotten before,” Morrissey said.
One of the scholarship recipients, Jordonha Wilson, described her award as one that was well needed as “I was facing financial problems, and this is a great motivation for me. This scholarship is helping me to see my future as I hope to become a film director/actress”, she noted.
Safia Latchman, the other recipient said that, “this is another step for me to further my education,” and stated that she wants to be become a dance therapist, recording artiste, and a lawyer.
When asked what’s next for Jamaicansmusic.com, Morrissey provided that next year is the company’s fifth anniversary, and they’ll be unveiling “a timeline of Jamaican music history on our Facebook Page and website, a mixtape celebrating the last five years of Jamaican music, and a virtual marketplace for Jamaican goods online.”
