The scholarships were presented to the recipients during the college’s student awards ceremony, held on November 8 at the Courtleigh Auditorium. They were handed out by the company’s CEO Alex Morrissey, a young entrepreneur. Each is valued at $126,000. Morrissey and Digicel Jamaica also gave the students two Digicel MI-FI devices that will enable them to browse the Internet.
In presenting the two devices, Tamiann Young, Digicel’s public relations executive, stated, “Digicel is always excited to support initiatives that boost the morale of our students and we commend Alex Morrissey for his vision behind this initiative in support of students in the creative area of the performing arts. We are pleased to present the students with the 4G MI-FI and credit, which we know will go a long way in helping with their studies.”
Morrissey explained that his company had matured to a point which makes it possible to grant other scholarships in the future.
Maturity
“Jamaicansmusic.com turns five in January and the company has reached a level of maturity, so much so that I saw it fit to give to students in the performing arts. It’s the first year we are doing this and hopefully next year we can get more people on board and award other individuals,” he explained.
During last summer, Morrissey gave students the opportunity to apply for a full- tuition scholarship from his company if they were pursuing an associate of science degree in the performing arts.
Latchman and Wilson, who are past students of Clan Carthy High School, have been involved in the performing arts for many years and with the accolades to prove it. They were more than elated to have received the scholarships.
